Thermopile monitors gas pilot flame to ensure the pilot is burning. The thermopile closes off gas to the gas valve if it detects a loss of pilot flame. Turn off the gas supply to the water heater before replacing the part. Use this pilot assembly that fits 301 series liquid-propane standard models gas water heater with Honeywell gas control valves only.
